Santhal art is a folk art made by the Santhal tribes in Bengal . They are the third largest tribe of India whose origins are believed to date back to the Pre-Aryan times.
The paintings are a creative expression of the Santhal tribe from West Bengal. They have a distinctive style that revolves around weddings, dancing, music, harvest, rituals, family life, nature, creatures and daily activities.

The Santhals paint on pata or cloth which form scrolls that unfurls to tell a story. They take the paintings from village to village, not to sell the paintings itself but to get money in the form of donations by singing songs based on the stories, that are known as Pater Gaan.
They paint the walls of their huts during the village festivals for ceremonial perfomances and also as a form of self expression.
